    나는 모르겠어 .... 무엇을 입어야 할지 ... 이번주 콘서트에 말이야. 팁 좀 줄 수 있겠냐?

B: You should wear a skirt and a blouse. Don't wear jeans.
    너는 스커트와 블라우스를 입어야 할거야. 청바지 입지 마셈.

G: All right. I'll keep that in mind.
    오케이. 기억할게

G: You lived in Malaysia once, didn't you?
    너 전에 말레이시아에 살았어, 그렇지 않았니?

B: Yes. Why?
    맞아. 왜 그런디?

G: I'm going to take a trip to Malaysia next week. Can you give me some tips?
   나는 여행을 갈거야 .. 말레이시아로 .. 다음 주에.  나한테 조언 좀 해 줄래?

B: Well, you shouldn't touch a child's head.
   글쎄, 너는 아이의 머리를 만지면 안돼.

G: Really? That's interesting. I wonder why. 
   정말? 오 흥미로운데. 왜 그런지 궁금한데.

G: You're from Mexico, aren't you?
    멕시코에서 왔죠, 그렇지 않나요?

B: Yes. Why?
   맞아요. 왜 그란디요?

G: I'm going to visit Mexico next month. Can you give me some tips?
    저는 멕시코를 방문할거에요 .. 다음달에요. 조언 좀 해 줄 수 있나욥?

B: Well, don't ask for directions. 
    글쎄요, 길을 물어보지 마세요.
    People may give you direnctions even if they're not sure the directions are right.
    사람들은 길을 알려줄 거에요 ... 그들이 확신하지 못해도 말이에요... 바로 그 길이 맞다는 것을요..
    So, you'd better use a map.
    그래서, 당신은 지도를 사용하는게 좋을 거에욥.

G: Okay. I'll keep that in mind.
    오케이. 기억할게요.

G: Have you met the new English teacher and math teacher? 
    만난적 있냐 ..... 새로운 영어샘과 수학샘을?

B: No, not yet.
    아니, 아직.

G: I met the English teacher, and she was very nice.
    나는 영어샘을 만났는데, 그녀는 정말 멋지더라.

B: What about the math teacher? Have you met him?
    수학샘은 어떤데 ? 그를 만나보았니?

G: Not yet, but I'm looking forward to meeting him. 
    아직, 그렇지만 나는 그를 만나보고 싶어.

B: Hey, Sujin, did you sign up for the Taekwando class?
   야, 수진아, 태권도 수업 수강신청했냐?

G: No, I didn't. I signed up for the ballet class. 
   아니, 안했어. 나는 발레수업 등록할거야.  

B: When does the class start?
   언제 수업이 시작하는데?

G: It starts next Monday. I'm looking forward to it.
    그것(발레수업)은 다음주 월요일날 싲가해. 나는 그것(발레수업)이 정말 기대되.

B: Semi, are you going anywhere this summer?
   세미야, 너 이번 여름에 어디 갈거니?

G: Yes. I'm going to Jejudo with my friend's family.
    어. 나는 제주도에 갈거야.... 내친구의 가족과 함께 말이지.

B: That's really great.
   멋진데.

G: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the trip.
    맞아. 나는 여행이 정말 기대가 되.




In Conversation

A. Look and Guess - The boy is going travel somewhere. Guess what country he is going to visit.

Sejun: Look at the poster, Anna! That's the Taj Mahal. 
          포스터를 바바, 애나야! 타지마할이야.
          I'm going to India next week with my family, and I'm really looking forward to it.
          나는 인도에 다음주에 갈거야 .. 가족과 같이 말이야, 그리고 나는 정말 그것이 기대가 된다.

Anna: That's great! I actually lived in India for three years when I was young.
          오 ... 좋은데! 나는 사실 인도에 살았어 ... 삼년동안 말이야 .. 내가 어렸을때.

Sejun: Really? I didn't know that.
          정말?    그건 몰랐었네.

Anna: Do you hve any friends or relatives living in India, Sejun?
          친구들이나 ... 친척들이 있니 .... 인도에 살고 있는, 세준아 ?

Sejun: Yes, I do. My uncle is working for a computer company in Mumbai, and he invited us.
           그래, 있어. 내 삼촌이 컴터 회사에서 일하고 있어 .. Munbai에서 말이야, 그리고 그가 우리를 초대했어.

Anna: Oh, I see.
          오, 알겠삼.

Sejun: We're going to visit an Indian family while we're there. I guess you know a lot about India. 
          우리는 인도가족을 방문할거야 ... 우리가 거기에 있는 동안에. 나는 생각해 ...니가 인도에 대해 많이 안다고.
          Can you give me some tips?
          나에게 팀 좀 줄 수 있겠니?

Anna: Well, you'd better not eat with your left hand.
          음, 너는 먹지 말아야 해 .. 왼손으로 말이야.

Sejun: Why not?
         왜 안되는데?

Anna: Indians consider the left hand unclean, so it's not good manners.
         인도사람들은 생각해 .. 왼손을 ... 깨끗하지 않은 것으로, 그래서 그것은 좋은 예절이 아니야.

Sejun: Okay. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. 
         알겠어. 기억할게.  고마와.

The Rajah's Rice
왕의 쌀.

Once upon a time, [ a girl (who was) named Chandra ] lived / in a small village / in India.

옛날에,                 소녀 .... Chandra라고 이름지어진 .. 소녀가 .. 인도의 작은 마을에 살았습니다.

Chandra's job was to wash the Rajah's elephants. She loved elephants. She also loved numbers.

Chandra의 직업은 왕의 코끼리를 씻기는 것이었습니다. 그녀는 코끼리를 사랑했습니다. 그녀는 또한 숫자를 사랑했습니다.  
One day, when Chandra was about to enter the palace, the guard stopped her.

어느날, Chandra가 막 궁전을 들어갈려고 했을때, 궁지기가 그녀는 멈춰세웠습니다.

"You cannot come in. The elephants are all sick."
넌 들어올 수 없다.  코끼리가 모두 아프다.

Doctors came, but the elephant got sicker.
                                                  sick + (er): 점 점 더 아프다  
의사들이 왔으나 .. 코끼리는 점 점 더 아팠습니다.

One morning, the Rajah saw Chandra at the gate. "What are you doing?" he asked.
어느날,          왕이 Chandra를 입구에서 보았습니다. 너 여기서 뭐하셈? 그가 물었습니다.

"I'm worried about the elephants," she said. "I know them very well. Maybe I can help them." 
저는 코끼리가 걱정이 되요 라고, 그녀는 말했습니다. 나는 그들을 매우 잘 알아요. 제가 그들을 도울 수있을 거에욥.  

The Rajah said, " If you can save them, I'll give you (what you want), I mean, anything."

관계대명사 what: I'll give you (What you want) 
                                                 ↖  ↙
                                           = (the thing which you want)

선행사를 자체에 포함하는 관계대명사 what은 선행사가 따로 없고
the thing(s) which or that 의 뜻을 나타냅니다.

ex) I don't want to remember the thing which they did to me.
                                           = what they did / to me. (그들이 내게 한 것)


[What, which] you believe is not always right.
Some jobs [what, which] were needed in the past don't exist now.
[What, Which] I don't understand is the reason why she left me without saying good-bye.
Mountain climbing is a hobby [what, which] gives you more energy in your everyday life.

Chandra examined the elephants and found a problem with their ears.

Chandra는 코끼리를 진찰하고 .... 문제를 발견했습니다 ... 그들의 귀에서욥.

Chandra cleaned their ears. Soon, all the elephants got well.
Chandra는 그들의 귀를 씼겼습니다. 곧, 모든 코끼리가 회복되었습니다.

The Rajah was very happy. "Tell me (what you want)," said the Rajah.
왕은 매우 기뻤습니다.         나에게 말하셈 .. 니가 원하는 것을, 이라고 왕이 말했습니다.

Chandra thought about her hungry villagers. Then, she noticed the chessboard.
                                                                               v. 알아차리다
Chandra는 생각했습니다.. 그녀의 굶주리는 마을 사람들을요. 그리고, 그녀는 체스판이 있는 것을 보았습니다.

"(All I ask for) is rice," she said.

"If Your Majesty pleases, place two grains of rice on the first square of this chessboard. 
조건         현재시제 (will please x)      place: v. ~ 를 놓다, 두다
제가 요청하는 것은 쌀입니다, 그녀가 말했습니다. 만약 왕께서 허락하신다면, 쌀 두알을 ... 이 체스판 첫번째 사각형에다가 놓아주십시요.

Place four grains on the second, eight on the next, and so on, until the last square."
두번째 사각형에는 네알을 놓아주세요, 다음에는 여덟알, 그리고 계속, 마지막 사각형까지 쭉... 그렇게요.

"Do as she wishes," he said to his servants.
    ~ 대로
해 주어라 ... 그녀가 소원하는데로 ... 라고 그는 그의 신하들에게 말했습니다.

중학교3학년 이라면...
as 가 접속사로 쓰일 경우 (사실은 6개 정도의 의미가 있지만) 
실제로는 아래 네가지 정도의 쓰임을 알고 있음면 큰 무리가 없을 것입니다.

1. ~처럼, ~대로 
   
      ex) I just entered the room as he did. 
                                        (~대로)       => 이 예문이 교과서에 나온 as와 쓰임이 같습니다.

2. ~ 함에따라 
   
      ex) As you experience many things, your interests may change.
       ~함에 따라  

3. ~ 할 수록 
   
       ex) As we went up the mountain, we got tired nd thirsty.
          ~ 할수록

4. ~ 때문에

       ex) As it was very hot and humid, I was exhausted before I got there. 
          ~ 때문에

Two servants began to place rice on the chessboard.
두명의 신하들이 시작했습니다.... 체스판에 쌀을 놓기를요.

Each row had eight squares. So, when they got to the last square of the first row, they had to place 256 grains.
각각의 줄에는 여덟개의 사각형이 있었다. 그래서, 그들이 첫번째줄의 마지막 사격형에 다다랐을때, 그들은 256개의 쌀알을 놓아야만 했습니다.  

At the first square of the second row, the servants had to count as many as 512 grains of rice, 
                                                                             v. 수를 세다    ~ 만큼 많은
첫번째 사격형에서 .. 두번째 줄의, 신하들은 세어야만 했습니다 ...512개만큼 많은 쌀알을 말이죠.

so Chandra showed them an easier way.
그래서 Chandra는 그들에게 쉬운 방법을 보여주었습니다.

Chandra explained, "Two hundred and fifty six grains of rice amounts to one spoon of rice.
                                                                                     총합이 ~ 가 되다
Chandra는 설명했습니다, 256개의 쌀알은 .... 쌀 한 스푼이 됩니다.

So, why don't you just put two spoons of rice on it?"
그니깐, 거다가 .... 쌀 두 스푼을 놓으면 됩니다.

In this way, the servants continued.
이러한 식으로, 신하들은 계속했습니다.

(The eighth square on the second row) needed 256 spoons of rice, which amounted to a bowl.

두번째줄의 여덟번째 칸에는 256 스푼의 쌀이 필요 했습니다, 그것은 한 사발의 양이 었습니다.

On the third row, the servants started to count by bowls.

세번째 줄에서, 신하들은 사발로 셈을 하기 시작했습니다.

Two bowls for the first square, then four, and so on.
첫번째 칸에 두 사발, 그리고 네 사발, 그렇게 ... 쭉쭉...

(The rice for the last square) completely filled a large cart.

마지막 칸에 들어갈 쌀은 큰 카트를 채웠습니다.

By the middle of the fifth row, all the Rajah's rice was gone. 
                                                                     사라지다, 바닥나다.  
다섯번째 줄의 중간에서, 왕의 모든 쌀을 바닥이 났습니다.

The Rajah said to Chandra, "I am a very rich man,
and it took all my rice to fiil a little more than one half of the chessboard. 
                                                                 = 1/2                            
왕은 Chandra에게 말했습니다, 나는 매우 부자다, 근데,...  내 쌀 모두를 써버렸다..... 체스판 1/2 보다 약간 더 많이 채우는데 말이다.

How much rice will it take to fiil the whole board?"
얼마나 많은 쌀이 전체판을 채우는데 필요하느냐?

"If you keep doubling the rice to the last square, all of India will be knee-deep in rice," said Chandra. 
                 v. double: 두배로 하다                                              a. 무릎 깊이의
만약 마지막 칸까지 쌀을 두배로 놓는다면, 인디아 전역이 ... 쌀이 무릎까지 찰 겁니다, 라고 Chandra는 말했습니다.
